Most of us find that our lives are more complicated than we wish they were. We are way too busy, and we have become accustomed to having (and thinking we need) way too much “stuff.” Our children are not immune from this. Many of their lives are over-scheduled, and they are the targets of sophisticated marketing campaigns aimed at convincing them that they can’t possibly be happy without this or that product. Thanksgiving offers a good time to evaluate the priorities that order our lives. We want to help children learn to tell the difference between their needs and their wants. We want to help them to feel and express gratitude for what they have rather than constantly longing for what they don’t have. We want to help them see that they can live full and satisfying lives with less stuff. Finally, we want this issue to remind them that they can show their gratitude to God by sharing what they have with those who have less.
