Lesson 12: Mediator of the New Covenant (The Go-Between)
Deadline: November 19, 2017
Scripture: Hebrews 12:14, 15, 18-29
What to Write: The psalmist affirms that God allows humans to approach the divine; the writer of Hebrews proclaims that Jesus provides the means of boldly approaching the presence of God. Humans desire to experience a power greater than themselves, but do not always realize that drawing near to such needed power can be an awesome prospect. The passage implies that both purposeful, resolute action (make every effort, v. 14) and anxiety-producing risk (v. 18) are often involved in drawing near to a holy God. How can people approach such a power without being consumed? Christians often begin their faith development in fear and trepidation and move to a greater sense of centeredness, assurance, and trust in God. Believers understand that Jesus Christ is the bridge that connects them—as sinners and less than perfect people—to a holy God. How does the believer take time to experience awe in the presence of a holy God?
